School / Practice example

A proposal people can assess

Explain the problem, share what you know and compare the options. Make it clear what the group needs to decide.

The situation

Your student group has spotted a problem at school. Everyone wants to do something about it, but people have different ideas and no one has checked what each would take.

Your decision

Put together a proposal that makes it clear what you’re asking the group to decide.

Before you respond

  • What have you seen for yourself, and what are you assuming?
  • Who would this change affect?
  • What would the person making the decision need to know?

Work through it

  1. Use a specific example to explain the problem.
  2. Compare two realistic options. List what you still need to find out about each.
  3. Ask for one clear decision and check who has the authority to make it.
Consider a possible response

“Here’s the problem we’ve noticed and two things we could try. We still have a few questions. Which option should we check with the person responsible?”

This is one way to respond. Adapt it to your group, your responsibilities and the people involved.
