Speak up and be heard

Say what's difficult, ask for what would help and listen to the answer.

Choose one thing you want someone to understand. Explain what's difficult and ask for a change that would help. You can practice with someone you trust or write your thoughts down first. If it feels safe, listen to the other person's answer and ask about anything you don't understand. You don't have to fix everything in one talk. Before you finish, work out who can help with the next step.

Talk it through

  • What happened that you want someone to understand?
  • What could you ask for that would help?
  • Who could help you practice or come with you when you talk?

Try this next

  1. Write or say what's difficult. Give one example.
  2. Practice asking for what you need with someone you trust.
  3. Choose who to talk to and a good time. Before you finish, ask what happens next.
