A real BookTok example from TikTok’s newsroom
The article contains creator and publisher posts about books. It gives cultural context; we are not accusing those creators of breaking disclosure rules. The exercise below uses a separate fictional review.
Open the original referenceThe recommendation is filmed. The relationship is missing.
“I actually like it” is only one part of the story.
Hear what matters to each person. Choose a question. Notice what their answer adds, then check it against the case materials.
Gia
21, recording a book recommendation
“I did like the book. They also sent it to me. I thought saying something positive made that part obvious.”
Ask Gia
Would a new viewer know that?
Gia “No. They would just see a recommendation. I need to say what the relationship was, where they will actually notice it.”
What to check nextCheck the FTC guidance for the connection and the format used.
Is one hidden hashtag enough?
Gia “If people have to open a wall of text to work out the relationship, I have not made it clear. Let me fix the spoken and visible parts.”
What to check nextEvaluate the disclosure in the post itself, not only in a profile or later comment.
Caio
24, editing the reel
“The cut is good. That is not a reason to keep an unclear version.”
Ask Caio
Can you fix this without changing her opinion?
Caio “Yes. Keep her honest review and explain the connection clearly. Disclosure and opinion are not the same thing.”
What to check nextSeparate the review’s claims from the information about the relationship.
What would you check before uploading?
Caio “Watch it the way a stranger would, once, on a phone. Can they catch the connection before acting on the recommendation?”
What to check nextCheck placement, timing, readability and the exact current source guidance.

Put their perspectives together
Liking a product does not make its relationship to the creator irrelevant. The communication task is to make that relationship understandable in context.
A person’s account explains their perspective. It still needs checking where it makes a factual claim.

Redesign an invented sponsored recommendation so its relationship with the brand is clear. Keep the recommendation separate from the disclosure and explain your choices.
Build your responseFollow the question.
A recommendation can come with a relationship you cannot see: a payment, a free product or another connection to the brand. Knowing that relationship can help you evaluate the message without assuming the creator is dishonest.
The FTC’s guidance says relevant material connections should be made clear. For a video endorsement, the disclosure should appear in the video, not only in its description. A sincere opinion does not remove the need to explain a relevant connection. Check the FTC guidance.
A recommendation can be sincere and still be an ad.
Liking a product and having a relationship with its seller can both be true. A free item, payment or another relevant connection gives viewers context for an endorsement. It does not automatically prove the opinion is false.
FTC guidance asks for material connections to be disclosed clearly. A tag that only names the brand may not explain the relationship. For video, look for the disclosure in the video itself, not only below it. Then check a second question: what supports the actual claim about the product? A clear disclosure does not make every claim accurate. Use the fictional example here to practice, without accusing a real creator based on a guess.
- Material connection
- A relationship that could affect how someone evaluates an endorsement.
- Disclosure
- An understandable explanation of that relationship.
- Endorsement
- A promotional message reflecting someone’s views or experience.
In this fictional example, a publisher gives a creator a book free in exchange for a review. They love it. What makes the relationship clearest?

Before you call it done: Can a viewer identify the material connection without opening another screen or guessing what a vague label means?

These are our teaching applications of the ideas below. For the rule or factual claim itself, use this case’s source file.
Framing
Robert M. Entman, 1993. Research article.
What a message selects and emphasizes can shape how a problem, its causes and possible responses are understood.
Keep in mind: Identifying a frame does not establish a speaker’s intent or prove how every audience member will respond.

- Separate the product claim from the creator’s relationship with the brand.
- Write a visible and spoken disclosure for the fictional video.
- Check whether a viewer who misses the description would still understand the connection.
