Prepare for a council meeting

Read the agenda, bring a question or idea and get clear on what you've agreed to do.

Read the agenda and available papers before the meeting. Choose one item where you can bring a question or relevant experience. Check your role and how to speak or contribute. During the meeting, listen for what's agreed, what's still open and who will follow up. Before leaving, make sure you understand any task you've accepted: what you'll do, when it's needed and who can help.

Talk it through

  • Which item on the agenda do you have a question about?
  • What do the meeting papers tell you, and what still needs checking?
  • What would you need to know before accepting a follow-up task?

Try this next

  1. Read the agenda and mark one question beside the item it relates to.
  2. Check with the meeting contact if your role or the participation process is unclear.
  3. After the meeting, record your agreed action, deadline and any unanswered question.
