What’s outside the frame?
Lupa looks for missing context and crops.
Prompt
What came right before or after this, and where would you find the full version?
Sentence starters
- Right before this, I think ___ happened, because ___.
- To see the full version, I’d go to ___.
Level up Grades 9–12
Write a caption that would make this piece mislead someone. What part of the full version fixes it?
College stretch
Name the framing choice in this excerpt: what it includes and what it cuts. Then apply SIFT’s last step and trace it to its original context. What does the full version change?
Follow-up questions
- If you can’t find the full version in 2 minutes, what’s safe to say when you share it?
- What would change if you saw the whole version?
Best with
- Short video clip Pause early, then reveal the rest.
- Song or verse A verse leaves out the rest.
- Social post or screenshot Screenshots crop out who posted first.
- Photo or image Photos get cropped out of a bigger scene.
Educator notes
Look for
- Separates what the piece shows from what they’re guessing.
- Names a real place to find the full version, such as the whole episode, the album, the chapter or the original upload.
- Says what the missing part could change.
- Points to a moment, line, lyric or image in the piece as evidence.
Strong level-up answer: The caption is literally true of the excerpt, and the answer names the moment in the full version that undoes it.
Strong college answer: Names what the excerpt includes and cuts, traces it to the original context and says what the full version changes.
Tip: Stop the piece a few seconds early, or read only the first line, and show the rest during Share.
Bridge to Lesson 1
Today a short clip hits the crew’s group chat right before an event, and you’re the one who finds the full version before anyone reposts it.
No media handy
Project the lesson’s own document and ask its question. Document: The forwarded screenshot and clip in the crew’s group chat
“They’re removing access tonight. Screening canceled?”
Attached clip, 7 seconds.
Coordinator: “…we are removing access—” The clip ends there.
Ask: What does the coordinator say in the clip, and what does the caption add?
Follow-up questions
- Where does the clip stop?
- What would you need to see before you tell friends the screening is canceled?
Listen for: Students separate the coordinator’s words (“we are removing access”) from the caption’s question (“Screening canceled?”).
